A Story About A Mineral Based Makeup Brand
I found mineral based makeup a couple years ago and I’ve tried out many brands since. Some were disappointing, some were average, and others were excellent. After trying so many brands I finally had something to compare them against, so these reviews can be more complete.

Bare Escentuals is a very popular brand and possibly the oldest company for mineral based makeup. Originating in 1976 in San Francisco, they’ve been providing a natural alternative for almost 30 years. They are commonly advertised on infomercials, particularly on home shopping network channels. Affiliates sell them on EBAY or their own personal websites. It’s a well-known brand and is often the first brand someone tries when they choose mineral based makeup. It was the first brand I tried after seeing it on a late night infomercial.
When I purchased Bare Escentuals, I got a deal with mineral veil and warmth, two different foundations, and three brushes for around $60. It was actually the I.D. Bare Minerals brand, but they are the same corporation. I chose the light foundation set.
After I’d applied the makeup, I was happy with the color, coverage and appearance of the makeup. It was comfortable and light and helped to conceal my rosacea. I was very content and wasn’t concerned that I was charged for and sent a refill every three months. I couldn’t wait to expand my collection to include eye shadows and blushes. But I was so thrilled to find a foundation that didn’t irritate my skin, clog my pores or look like a mask. The only thing I was unhappy with was the shininess of the makeup.
During summer, I continued to wear Bare Escentuals and exercised regularly. However, the summer heat caused me to sweat and soon enough my face started itching. The itch was constant and intense. I thought it might be my cleanser, moisturizer, etc. After all, I did have sensitive skin. After trying everything I could think of, including detergent, and nothing helped, it finally hit me that I should test my makeup. And sure enough, that’s what was causing the itch. I got rid of it and conducted some research. That’s when I learned that the two things I hated about the makeup (the itching and the shininess) were likely caused by the ingredient Bismuth Oxychloride.
